Ambassador Al-Orabi, Dr. Amr Salama, and Major General Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Participate in the Memorial of the Late Major General Hossam Badr — May He Rest in Peace — During the AFASU Meeting Held in Cairo
The Afro-Asian Union for Tourism, Development, Technology, and Research (AFASU) held its periodic meeting in Cairo, chaired by His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Al-Orabi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Afro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Organization (AAPSO), the parent organization of the Union. The meeting was attended by His Excellency Prof. Dr. Amr Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities, Major General Ahmed Abdullah, former Governor of the Red Sea Governorate, as well as a distinguished group of public figures and experts from various African and Asian countries — along with all members of the Afro-Asian Union (AFASU).
In his speech, Ambassador Mohamed Al-Orabi affirmed that the Union is one of the effective arms of the Afro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Organization, playing a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development, revitalizing tourism, and supporting joint cooperation between the two continents. He emphasized the need to rebuild communication bridges between solidarity committees in the member states in a way that contributes to restoring momentum for joint projects.
All attendees took part in the memorial service for the late Major General Hossam Badr — may God have mercy on him — recalling his virtues and pledging to follow in his footsteps.
Those who participated in the memorial included:
Major General Ahmed Abdullah
Minister Dr. Amr Ezzat Salama
Minister Ambassador Mohamed Al-Orabi
Dr. Hossam Darwish
Major General Ashraf Abu Aish
All attendees stood for a moment of silence to recite Al-Fatiha in honor of the deceased.
For his part, Dr. Hossam Darwish, President of the Union, extended his gratitude and appreciation to the leaders supporting the Union’s mission. He affirmed that the upcoming phase will witness a new beginning across a number of high-priority fields, most notably scientific research, tourism, media, technology, and community empowerment.
Dr. Hossam Darwish then issued a decision appointing Major General Ashraf Abu Aish as Secretary-General of the Union, succeeding the late Major General Hossam Badr El-Din — may he rest in peace.
The appointment was officially announced and activated during this extraordinary meeting of the Union.
This appointment came in recognition of the distinguished career of Major General Ashraf Abu Aish in the Republican Guard and the Presidential Institution, where he held senior positions including Aide to the President of the Republic and Commander of the Presidential Complex, before retiring from military service with the rank of Major General in 2021.
Dr. Hossam Darwish emphasized in his speech that this decision is part of a comprehensive development plan for the Union, aiming to enhance its regional and international effectiveness and to leverage national expertise in support of development projects and cooperation between African and Asian countries through the fields of tourism, technology, media, and scientific research.
For his part, Major General Ashraf Abu Aish expressed his deep appreciation for the great trust placed in him, affirming his commitment to serving the Union and its voluntary and developmental objectives, and his determination to be a strong supporter of the members and the General Secretariat, continuing the spirit of teamwork that has distinguished AFASU since its inception.
Later, Mr. Ramadan Tantawy — a member of the Union and Assistant Secretary-General for Public Relations — was honored in recognition of his voluntary efforts and for recently obtaining his doctoral degree.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dr. Hossam Darwish honored His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Al-Orabi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Afro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Organization (AAPSO), presenting him with the Union’s Shield of Honor.
